Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is scheduled to convene the security cabinet Monday evening to discuss regional developments, Israel Radio said.
The ministers are set to discuss repercussion in Lebanon in response to the International Tribunal’s decision to publish the names of suspects responsible for the 2005 assassination of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.
Last week, Israel’s Channel One reported the prime suspect to be named by the international tribunal is Mustafa Badr Al-din , also known as “Elias Sa’ab,”. According to the report he was also involved in the failed assassination attempt of Kuwait’s ruler in 1985.
The television report said Hariri’s son Sa’ad, currently serving as the country’s Prime Minister, reportedly plead with the international tribunal to refrain from publishing the name of the suspect who murdered his father, fearing it would hamper ties with Syria and Iran.
The pending announcement threatens the stability in the country and could possibly lead to a civil war, the report said.
Israel’s cabinet ministers will also discuss a decision by U.N.Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to establish a probe into the Israeli raid of the Gaza bound flotilla in May in which nine people were killed, Monday’s radio report said.
The U.N. Secretary General informed Defense Minister Ehud Barak of the decision to investigate the incident during his recent visit to New York. Following the meeting, Barak told reporters that Israel agrees in principal to the establishment of the U.N. probe.
According to the radio report, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand Geoffrey Palmer is expected to lead the committee which will be comprised of representatives from the U.S., Turkey and Israel.
