Israel rejects request by Daniel Barenboim to hold concert in Gaza By Jill Glass for Guysen International News - Tuesday 13 April 2010 - 09:35 |

Israel rejected a request by pianist, conductor Daniel Barenboim to hold a concert in the Gaza Strip promoting peace, saying as long as Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit remains captive, Israel will not permit concerts there.
Barenboim had planned to enter Gaza via the Erez Crossing with his Divan orchestra, that includes players from Europe, the United States, Israel and Arab countries.
The Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero reportedly made a request on Barenboim’s behalf to Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
After lengthy discussions in the defense establishment, Israel informed Barenboim that his request had been denied, but said the pianist is welcome to perform in Ramallah or Jenin as an alternative.
In an interview in the Al Fais newspaper, Barenboim criticized Israel over its decision. |
