
The Nation will bow its head and mourn the millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust, as the country’s leaders attend the opening ceremony for Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Day that starts Sunday evening with a memorial service at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum.
Six Holocaust survivors will light torches at the ceremony commemorating the six million Jews who perished. Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres, the country’s chief rabbis, government officials and survivors and families will attend Sunday night’s service.
80,000 Holocaust survivors live in Israel today.
On Monday morning, the entire Nation will come to a standstill and bow its head to remember those murdered by the Nazis, as a siren is sounded throughout the country.
That afternoon, an exhibition that showcases creative works of some 300 Holocaust survivors will be opened to the public for the first time at Yad Vashem’s museum. The exhibition is called “Virtues of Memory: Six Decades of Holocaust Survivors Creativity.”
Yad Vashem also announced it has launched a new Web site in Russian ( www.yadvashem.org) as well as a new Youtube channel in Russian, that offers comprehensive information about the Holocaust, hundreds of documents, artwork and testimonies. |
