Five rockets fired at Eilat, Aqaba

Five rockets were fired at Eilat and Aqaba Monday morning, exploding in the sea near Eilat and in the Jordanian seaside resort of Aqaba, killing one person and injuring three. Israeli security officials estimate the rockets were fired by an Al Qaida or Global Jihad group in the Sinai.

Two rockets reportedly fell in the Red Sea near Eilat, and two in Jordan, including one near the Intercontinental Hotel in Aqaba wounding four people. A fifth rocket is believed to have exploded in a field near Eilat.
 
Israeli security officials estimate the rockets were fired by a Global Jihad group in the Sinai Peninsula. The attacks occurred during peak tourist season in Israel’s southernmost city.
 
In April,  a Russian Grad missile hit Aqaba, hours after  explosions were heard in Aqaba and Eilat.  Initial media reports said two Katyusha rockets were fired at Eilat, one exploded in the waters off the coast and the second near the Jordanian city of Aqaba
 
Jordanian officials later said a Russian made Grad missile hit a refrigerator warehouse in Aqaba, hours after explosions were heard in Aqaba and Eilat.

In August 2005,An al-Qaida-linked group claimed responsibility for rocket attacks in Jordan's Aqaba port and the neighboring Israeli port city of Eilat.
 
One rocket narrowly missed the USS Ashland docked at Aqaba  and struck a warehouse in the vicinity of the Ashland and the USS Kearsarge, , killing a Jordanian soldier, Private Ahmad Alnajdawi, and injuring another. The two ships had been docking at the Aqaba port for ten days. The other missile fell near a Jordanian hospital but caused no injuries.

 The rocket aimed at Eilat exploded about 15 meters from the Eilat airport, near several hotels.
 
A branch of the Al-Qaida linked terrorist organization Abdullah Azzam Brigades in Egypt claimed responsibility for the attack.
